Long-term research of weed composition in cereal fields promote appropriate use of herbicides and implementation of integrated plant protection. LPPRC monitored weed species during 2013 and 2014 in 72 fields from 12 farms of different sizes in Latgale region. The research was conducted in the framework of the EAFRD project “Integrated pest management for weed control in arable crops for sustainable use of the environment and resources”. Weed species composition, abundance and density of each weed species were determined. In both years cereals were the main crops in the investigated fields (71–72% from the total). In 2013 the main crop was winter wheat (31%), while in 2014 it was spring wheat (33%). The dominant annual broadleaf weed species was field pansy (Viola arvensis L.). The density of field pansy in 2014 was two times higher than in 2013. The dominant grass weed species was couch grass (Elymus repens (L.) Gould). The abundance and density of couch grass were similar in both years. In 2014 the abundance and density of windgrass (Apera spica-venti (L.) P.Beauv) were considerably higher than in 2013. Likewise, the abundance of wild oat (Avena fatua L.) was higher than in 2013.
