Palm biodiesel : a cetane improver for diesel fuel

Cetane number is an important parameter for a fuel to be used in acompression ignition engine. It is a primary indicator of diesel fuel quality.Fuel with higher cetane number tends to lessen combustion noise thusensuring smooth running of the engine and resulted an increase in engineefficiency and power output. In the present study, the cetane study ofbiodieseland biodiesel/diesel blends were conducted using an Ignition Quality Tester (IQTTM). The ignition delay of the fuel was determined and converted to the respective derived cetane number (DCN) by an equation. Results from the current study showed that palm biodiesel possess higher DCN as compared to diesel fuels. It also served as a cetane improver for diesel fuels.
