Alternative livelihood projects involving local communities to promote biodiversity conservation in peat swamp forest - a case study in South-East Pahang peat swamp forest

This paper attempt to highlight current efforts by the Pahang Forestry Department and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)/ Global Environment Facility (GEF) in the peat swamp forest (PSF) Project MAL/99/G31 entitled Conservation and Sustainable Use of Tropical Peat Swamp Forests Associated Wetland Ecosystems with regards to the implementation of two alternative livelihood projects (ALP) for the indigenous Asli Jakun communities. The first project entitiled Traditional Asli Jakun Medicinal Heritage Garden Project (HG Project) in Kampung Simpai where as the second project is the Fish Cage Culture Project (FC Project) undertaken in Kampung Runchang. The introduction of the ALP is a vital first step in helping the indigenous communities to cope with their dwindling natural resource base and to assist these communities in developing sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities on the natural resources from the forest could be minimised, hence indirectly enhance the biodiversity conservation effort in the forest area.
