Peninsular Malaysia`s commitment to achieve sustainable forest management in he overall context of sustainable development will continue to emphasise pollution control and prevention, the integration of environmental factors into project planning and implementation and incorporation of environmental inputs into resource and regional development. Concentrated efforts and development towards sustainable management are diverse and multifold whereby Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia and other forestry related agencies will enhance their policies, strategies and programmes towards the attainment of the goals of sustainable development and integrated environmental considerations in decision-making process. The paper describes the present situation elaborating on the achievements and constraints of the quest to achieve sustainable forest management in Peninsular Malaysia. The paper also articulates the need to manage forest resources carefully to ensure sustainable growth through sustainable practices under the management systems applied. The importance of monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the Malaysia Criteria and Indicators (M C & I) is highlighted. Various collaborative projects and technical co-operation and assistance with other countries being implemented are outlined with special reference to the inputs of the Malaysian-German Sustainable Forest Management and Conservation Project in Peninsular Malaysia.
