Potential generation of biofuel from biomass (sewage sludge)

Sewage sludge is the waste produced from wastewater treatment plants. The total production of domestic sewage sludge in Malaysia was estimated at 3.2 million cubic meters per year. Generally, most of the sewage sludge wastes are disposed by sanitary landfills, agriculture decomposition and incineration. Whatever disposaltechniques being chosen, if the disposal was not monitored properly, the resulting pollution will cause bad impact to human health and environment, thus disposal alternatives should be sought. Pyrolysis is a technology that converts biomass to suitable energy form via thermal degradation, that produced three main products; char (solid), bio-oil (liquid) and gas. In this study, a comparison of pyrolysis of treated sewage siudge using two types of reactors; fixed and fluidised bed reactor was conducted. The pyrolysis was carried out at various operating temperatures ranging from 450°C to 600°C optimising on liquid yield. Results showed that the optimum bio-oil yield was 16.39 wt% and 28.48 wt% obtained at temperature 550°C and 600°C for fixed bed and fluidised bed reactor respectively.
