Production of charcoal and wood vinegar from Acacia mangium and Dillenia suffruticosa

Charcoal is a premium fuel that is widely used in many developing countries to meet household energy as well as for other needs. Charcoal production is one of the ways to utilize and recycle abandoned residues from plantation into usable form. Theobjectives of this study are to produce charcoal and wood vinegar from Acacia mangium and Dillenia suffruticosa and compare the physical and chemical properties of charcoal and wood vinegar produced. Charcoal of A. mangium and D. suffruticosa were produced through metal drum kiln and wood vinegar was collected as byproductof the process. Results showed that the calorific value, moisture content and ash content of A. mangium charcoal were significantly different from those of D.suffruticosa. The pH value of the wood vinegar product showed a significant difference, where A. mangium vinegar was more acidic than D. suffruticosa. Acacia mangium charcoal showed better quality charcoal as compared with D. suffruticosa as it has higher calorific value and fixed carbon content with lower moisture and ash contents.
