Performance of stingless bees in different hives under different ecosystems

Productivity and adaptability of stingless bee colonies in seven meliponiaries in Bicol were determined. The number of brood layers, pollen and honey pots in cocoshells were compared with those in the OATH/Box/Rafael's hives in varying ecosystems. Cocoshells as hives had more broods developed, honey and pollen pots produced than the OATH/Box/Rafael's hives. Differences in the brood layer production, honey and pollen pots produced in the different meliponiaries were observed. Pollen sources and bloom pattern in each meliponiary were identified. Adaptability of meliponiculture is influenced by the beekeeper's technical knowhow and environmental conditions. The performance in agroecosystem, forest, mangrove and coastal ecosystem differed significantly, and Abad's meliponiary differed from Sevillas, MTB and Barcelona's meliponiaries. Significant differences in terms of adaptability in the culture of stingless bee had technical knowhow and environmental concerns as top factors. Abundance of pollen and nectar sources, presence of the canopies as barriers and bee shelter, absence of pollutants, human disturbance and pests were factors which influence the adaptability of meliponiculture to the ecosystems.
