[Study the ability of some plant species planted to accumulate some heavy metals in Banias refinery company]
2014
Ibrahim,D.H
This study investigates the abilities of three different tree species (Pinus brutia , Cupressus sempervirens Lind L. and Acacia cyanophylla L.) planted on the site of Banias refienry company , to absorb and accumulate four heavy metals; lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu), that are commonly present in the refinery's emissions. Samples of the planted species (leaves, bark and wood) and thrir surrounding soil were collected and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Results showed that the concentrations of the studied heavy metals are above the permitted levels by the environmental agency (or), and the order of their concentrations was as follows (Zn Pb Cu Cd) in each analiesed soil and plant samples, Both P. brutia and A. cyanophylla showed a hyper cumulative capacity of Zn specially in their leaves where (BF1) )1.60 1.31 respectively), Cupressus sempervirens bark demonstrated a good ability to accumulate Cd and Cu elements, finally the bark of P. brutia and the leaves of A. cyanophylla accumulated Pb element at high concentrations( 30.84- 30.83 respectively ), and the wood of P. brutia containsd elevated concentrations of accumulated Zn and Pb elements (65.61 24.9 respectively) . The obtained analytical resultus emphasis the ability of these tree species to act as bio accumulators to these elements, and the examined species showed the low ability to accumulate (Pb) in their wood.
