Afficher plus [+] Moins [-]Despite a significant decrease in sugar production since Soviet times, Ukraine was still ranked the second largest sugar producer in Eastern Europe in 2011 after the Russian Federation, and ahead of Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary. Ukraine is also a net exporter of sugar and sugar-containing confectionary products. The domestic sugar industry provides an important contribution to employment and value added in the agrifood sector. Joint FAO and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) sector reviews help policy-makers and investors make informed decisions for more efficient and inclusive agrifood systems. This sugar sector review provides background information on sugar production, consumption and trade in Ukraine. It also discusses the competition between sugar beet and other crops and the profitability of sugar production. It provides a comparison of domestic and international sugar prices at various parity levels, identifies main producers and types of consumers, and discusses support and trade measures to inform interested policy-makers and investors.
