The effect of water deficit on the structural and functional characteristics of the photosynthetic apparatus and oxidative status of green barley seedlings is studied and presented in the article. It is proved that under conditions of water deficit the decrease of photosynthetic activity of PS 2 and the stoichiometric ratio change in the photosynthetic membranes integral pigment components take place. The functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus under drought conditions includes the heightened ability of barley plants to dissipate excess of absorbed light energy as heat, thus protecting the components of electron-transport chain in chloroplast membranes photosynthetic apparatus from over reduction. It is discovered that under conditions of water deficit in the green barley seedlings the signs of oxidative stress develop, that one can see on enhancing of lipid peroxidation process in cell membranes and a pool of hydrogen peroxide participating in the launch of the cell defensive system. In this case, it is observed the synthesis increase of a key antioxidant enzymes peroxidase and low molecular weight of antioxidants.
