Isolation and Purification of toxins from scorpion Mesobuthus Eupeus venom and studies on clinical manifestations caused by the venom in experimental animals.

Scorpion venom poisoning is one of the medical problem in Iran. It is more prominent in Khuzestan province. Scorpion Mesobuthus eupeus from family buthedea is one of the most popular scorpion found in almost every part of country . More than 400000 people are stung by scorpion in Khuzestan province out of which 45% are are stung by Mesobuthus eupeus. The venom of this scorpion contain neurotoxins and affect nervous system and if the patient dose not get medical treatment may die. In the present study the venom milking was carried out from this scorpion by electric shock and then the toxins were purified using DEAE-Sepharose and HPLC as well as Sephaedex G50. In all the steps of purification LD50 and protein content was determined. The yield of purified toxin was 2.3 % with LD50 of 12 microgram/ mice. On the other hand the clinical manifestations due to its venom were studied in rabbits . Pathological studies indicate that the venom affects mostly the heart and respiratory systems causing hemorrhage and pulmonary edema.
