Investigation of maternal immunity in lambs born to ewes vaccinated with sheep pox vaccine.

Sheep pox is a malignant pox disease of sheep witch characterized by fever, multiple non vesicular swelling on the skin and mucous membranes, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, respiratory distress and death. Vaccination is the current strategy for endemic areas. The colostorally derived antibody that present in the beginning stage of animal life, protect infection during the first month of life. Ipso facto colostoral antibodies are also important factor related to primary vaccination failure. The aim of this study was to investigate the duration of passive immunity in lambs born from ewes that vaccinated with single dose of Razi sheep pox vaccine. Thirty day after vaccination average of Neutralization index was .. Immunity in lambs wich had received colostrums from their vaccinated dam measured by Neutralization index test then these lambs challenged with SID /ml of Azerbaijan sheep pox virus strain at , , and days old . The Neutralization index of ,, and days old was ., ., . and . respectively. While in control lambs this titer ranged between -/. The challenge , and days old lambs developed only local reaction at the site of inoculation without secondary skin lesions. While the challenge of the days old lambs suffered from local and secondary skin lesions. In contrast all controls showed typical sheep pox symptoms. These results showed that virus replication occurred in all examination lambs at the site of challenge. However the passive immunity can prevent secondary spread of virus and protect lambs at least month old.
