Rice hull silica for sodium chloride tolerance of BR29 and FL478 rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties in a hydroponic system

Rice hull as a source of silica (SiO2) was being studied for salinity tolerance of rice in a hydroponic system. Silica from rice hull (RHS) was extracted after leaching with 1M HCI and calcination in a muffle furnace at 600 deg C for 6 hours. Analysis by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy showed that the white RHS contains 57.56 +- 1.24% silicon by weight. Two rice varieties, the salt-tolerant FL478 and salt-sensitive BR29, were treated with 75 ppm RHS at the vegetative stage using the hydroponic nutrient solution system. Under normal conditions, RHS treatment significantly increased the shoot dry weight of FL478 and increased shoot K + content of BR29. However, under 144 mM NaCl stress, RHS significantly increased the Si absorption of both BR29 and FL478 as indicated by the high concentration of Si in the shoots. It also resulted in the significant decrease of shoot Na+ of FL478 and the Na-K ratio of BR29. RHS may be a source of silica for hydroponic studies and may also affect the NaCl tolerance of rice.
