Land cover classification is one of the most important applications of remote sensing usually it provides information by dividing the land cover into different classes based on its land resources. Vegetation cover is important variable of land cover and represents a resource for humans. In this paper the study area has great importance to humans in terms of agriculture and economy, its vegetation cover is particularly important in terms of planning. The study area is broadly divided into two classes: vegetation and non-vegetation cover by using remote sensing techniques. For vegetation monitoring the remotely sensed data of SPOT-XS 20m resolution is used and classification is carried out by two different methods to have comparative analysis of the results by both techniques. At first instance supervised classification followed by maximum likelihood technique is being used for land cover classification specifically for vegetation cover. The second remote sensing technique Normalized Difference Vegetation Index NDVI is used for vegetation cover monitoring which is very useful technique in terms of vegetation cover analysis. The results of both techniques are compared spatially and statistically. The comparative analysis of both techniques proved very useful for vegetation cover monitoring.
