Smilevska Bisera
The major objective of the current study has been to examine potential impacts of Agriculture, Tourism and Agro-tourism on the region of the island of Crete (Greece). The frame of interest was to calculate output, income and employment multipliers and elasticities for these sectors in order to identify their linkages with the other sectors of the region’s economy. The research is concerned with the impact of the above mentioned sectors on the region’s economy in general and their prospect for future development. The study also touches on the topic of rural development through Agro-tourism. The Input-Output (I-O) method is chosen for the impact analyses, because of its advantages in calculation and its ability to examine an economy in general equilibrium approach. The national I-O table for Greece 2010 is used for the derivation of a regional Input-Output table for Crete through the Generation of Regional I-O Table (GRIT) technique. Later on, new sectors such as Tourism and Agro-Tourism are created on the regional I-O table based on secondary data. The results of the analyses show the economic benefits of Agriculture and Tourism sectors, their strong connection and impact on the region’s economy, and also the perspective of the Agro-tourism sector for the Cretan region. The current study can provide information to the regional policy makers about rural development through Agro-tourism and economic growth through Tourism.
