Knowledge and understanding of the spatiotemporal variability of soil water content (SWC) at the field or catchment scales are important for assessing the water balance dynamics, agricultural production and environmental performances. The apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa), measured by electromagnetic induction (EMI), has been widely used to assess the spatial variability of soil properties (texture, salinity, water content, among others). The purpose of this study was to test the potential use of an EMI-based sensor in predicting soil water content over the study area. This study was conducted in the Lebna catchment (210 km2), northern Tunisia, characterized by a semi-arid climate, hilly terrain and different soil types, and mainly covered by rainfed crops. Therefore, further research under new field samplings and conditions having a greater range of water content may be needed to better understand the processes and factors affecting soil ECa in response to soil water content variability before this technique could be used to assess spatial variation in SWC.
