The influence of drying characteristics and quality of spruce timber with content of reaction wood

The presented article is focused on comparison of the reaction and normal wood in the artificial drying process. The article monitors losses of moisture, moisture gradients, stress creation, cross warping and physical properties of selected samples. On the basis of measurements we can say that the difference between the reaction and normal wood is variable depending on different moisture content. In the content of free water area the reaction wood dries faster thannormal wood. But with moisture lower than the fibre saturation point the reaction wood dried similar to normal wood. The selected physical properties confirmed that there is less swelling in radial and tangential direction and more in longitudinal direction in reaction wood. Lower values of shrinkage of the reaction wood in longitudinal direction had very favourable impact on the intensity of cross warping. Right knowledge of these properties can help usto improve the quality and to increase the efficiency of production and it also may bring significant financial savings.
