In the Philippines, the average yield of garlic is 2.83 MT/ha, produced mainly in Ilocos Norte (69.1%) followed by Mindoro Occidental (17.9%), which is considered very low in comparison to 10.6 MT/ha average production of other countries. To address the concern of low yield, the effects of Trichoderma and GA3 application and the use of inner and outer cloves as planting materials in field production garlic bulbs were investigated. Initial study on the effects of biofertilizers on the survival and performance of tissue-cultured (TC) garlic revealed that the use of Trichoderma showed a significant increase in survival and yield of the TC garlic. Based on this, Trichoderma and GA3 were tested in non TC clove planting materials of accession 97 G (Ilocos White from Mindanao) and planted at IPB Demo Farm, CSC, CA, UPLB [University of the Philippines Los Ba├▒os]. Plants were harvested 118 days after planting and the average fresh weight of bulbs was recorded. Highest bulb weight was observed in treatment with Trichoderma (12.79 g) resulting to 12.86% yield increase over the control while the lowest was observed in treatment with GA3 (8.85 g), in addition, the percentage of producing large bulbs was highest with Trichoderma (16.8%) followed by GA3 (14.975%) and control (5.28%). With respect to the type of cloves used as planting materials, results showed that outer cloves yielded 11-21% higher than inner cloves. This study show that Trichoderma is an effective biofertilizer for increasing bulb weight and number of large bulbs both in TC and non-TC garlic and that higher yield can be obtained using outer cloves over inner cloves as planting materials. Results of this study would be of great use in mass production of garlic planting materials.
