Bac Kan banana (Musa x paradisiaca) (Musaceae) is the native variety that has high income potential for the growers in rural districts of Bac Kan province. However, cultivation of this variety still remains extensive and/or fragmented due to a number of constraints such as poor management of pests and diseases, unfavourable weather conditions, unsustainable upland cultivation techniques, limited investment capacity and unstable markets. To prevent degradation of the native variety and at the same time contribute to sustainable household economic development in the mountainous region, this study, in accordance with a technical component of developing intensive production guidelines, was conducted in Bac Kan town during May - August 2013. Our objectives were to discover the origin, distribution and detailed morphological traits of the native variety according to the evaluation standards of the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI). Outcomes of this research are expected to contribute to plant resources conservation, hybridization and commercial development for the Northern region of Vietnam. Our findings showed that Bac Kan banana originated from Khuoi Trang hamlet (GPS coordinate: 220 06'07''N; 1050 49' 41''E) of Nong Thuong commune - Bac Kan town. The morphological characteristics were described in details. This would contribute to differentiation of banana cultvars for future research.
