Sudden death syndrome (SDS) of soybean is a concern in the major soybean producing regions of North and South America. The disease is caused by soil-borne fungi of the genus <i>Fusarium</i> and is most recognized by the development of interveinal chlorosis and necrosis on leaves, and premature defoliation. Yield losses associated with SDS can be economically devastating depending on disease intensity and timing of disease onset. Our understanding about SDS has greatly expanded since it was first described in the USA in 1971, and a comprehensive review of the disease was written in 1997 by Roy <i>et al</i>. The goal of the present review is to provide an update on the current knowledge on SDS and identify resources where more detailed information can be found. The review will cover information on disease distribution and impact, pathogen taxonomy, disease aetiology, interactions with biotic and abiotic factors and disease management.
