Quaternary groundwater is widely used as drinking water source in many households due to the shallow occurrence. It also plays an important role to provide centralised water supply in the largest cities of Latvia, including the capital city Riga. Identification of groundwater vulnerable areas is a challenging task and necessary for sustainable water resources management in the future. In the context of groundwater vulnerability sand sediments are considered to be more like a threat than natural filter, especially when compared with more clayey sediments. During this research the groundwater chemical composition changes (nitrogen compounds) during filtration thorough Quaternary sediments at different sampling depths were studied. The results from case studies show that sand can play an important role in nitrogen reduction; still the effectiveness depends on its properties.
