Latvian quartz sand from Bāle and Skudras Deposits were examined. It is shown that grinding time remarkably influences the grain specific surface area which considerably increases to 3.19 m2/g after grinding. It is more than the specific surface area of sand powder used in the production of concrete. It was revealed that the pozzolanic activity of sand from Bāle and Skudras Deposits increased with the increasing of specific surface area. The study of morphology and crystalline phases for cement paste with grinded 12–14 μm disperse sands shows that sand acts as pore filler, as well as stimulates the formation of calcium silicate hydrate, during the hydration process.
