Molecular analysis of Philippine traditional pigmented rice germplasm stored at PhilRice genebank

Pigmented rice is one of the important resources for more nutritional rice that could complement to the growing need for healthier food in the world. Six hundred Philippine traditional pigmented rice accessions were analyzed using molecular techniques. Molecular analyses was done using Illumina Bead Array Infinium 6k SNP chip system. The genotype data has revealed relationships among the rice accessions and revealed a number of identical or near identical accessions. The genotypic data also shows that the accessions formed two distinct groups between indica and tropical japonica types. Diversity analysis of the Philippine indigenous pigmented rice accessions was compared to the broader context of global (89 countries) rice diversity. Hence the authors discuss the geographic distribution of population structures revealed by genotyping. The project is moving forward by selecting a core set of approximately 300 accessions. These accessions are being selected based on genotypic and phenotypic data. This core set will be the subject of deep re-sequencing and comprehensive chemical profiling of anthocyanins, flavonoids and other antioxidants within the grain. A GWAS will identify the genetic loci underpinning the production of these important nutritional compounds. The project expects to identify pigmented germplasm suitable for inclusion into breeding programmes and enable marker assisted selection to reduce the costs of selection. Molecular analysis is one of the key components in tapping the nutritional value of vast traditional pigmented rice that could help the country achieve rice security in the new future.
