Towards the development of mung bean varieties with high and stable yields for post-rice drought conditons

Post-rice cropping offers opportunity to improve farm productivity, and soil nutrient utilization and improvement. However, crops grown for post-rice condition should be short duration and able to endure water stress during the growing period. Initially, soil water is excessive during germination, but soil water becomes less available and soil more compact during the progression of growth. Mungbean is the choice for most post-rice systems, but varieties normally have low yields. This can be improved by developing varieties with at least 1 ton/ha seed yield. Towards this end, an initial 275 mungbean accession consisting lines from the germplasm collection and cultivars from different sites in the country with seven mungbean varieties as checks were screened for tolerance to water stress during post-rice cropping. The experiment was planted one week after the rice harvest in San Antonio, Bay, Laguna [Philippines] Twenty-five accessions were selected based on seed yield, days to flowering, deep to maturity and vigor, survivability, ratings. In terms of seed yield, the selected accessions performed relatively better with 0.4-0.8 t/ha, than all of the check varieties used with only 0.07-0.25 t/ha yield. Most of the selected lines were early maturing with days to flowering ranging to 31-38 DAP, and as compared to the check varieties that flowered later at 38-42 DAP. Different traits were also identified that can be associated with drought tolerance such as presence of leaf hairs and greenness of the leaves. It can be noted that 9 out of the 25 selected accessions also showed good performance from the previous upland drought experiment conducted, which suggest possible tolerance to drought conditions. Selected accessions were then used as parentals to produce crosses leading to drought tolerant varieties.
