Effect of soaking treatment of some naturally occurring compounds on embryo structure of maize (Zea mays L.) cv. Agaiti 2002
2012
Hafeez, Z.
Maize (Zea mays L.) is the third most important cereal crop in Pakistan. In the present study pre-sowing seed treatment of some osmoprotectants was applied to maize seed. The seed of Agaiti 2002 cultivar was collected from the Maize and Millet Research Institute, Yousafwala (Sahiwal), Punjab, Pakistan. The effect of proline, trehalose and glycinebetaine was observed on the embryo development at early stages. Cross and longitudinal sections of the embryo were prepared by free-hand sectioning. Technique and temporary slides were prepared using standards double technique. Different anatomical characteristics were investigated during the research. The data was subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) in completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. The results showed that pre-soaking seed treatments enhance the embryonic growth, seed emergence and germination. The treatments of osmoptotectants such as proline, trehalose and glycinebetaine increases embryonic growth under abiotic stresses (Zeid, 2009). The results showed that proline is the better osmoprotectant as compare to trehalose and glycinebetaine.
