Effect of salt stress on water relations, mineral accumulation, chlorophyll content and morphological characteristics of maize (Zea mays L.)

Salt stress is worldwide issue that is adversely affecting plant growth, development and productivity of plants especially of agricultural crops. A field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of salinity on physio-biochemical attributes of maize (Zea mays L.). The experiment was conducted in the Old Botanical Garden, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Seeds of two maize varieties Aqrab and Neelam were sown in field arranged in Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Four treatment levels maintained 0 mM NaCI (Control) 50 mM, 100 mM and 150 mM (Salt stress). Data for different morphological, physiological and biochemical parameters was recorded during the course of study and was subjected to statistical analysis. Salt stress adversely affected all parameters. Shoot and root length, shoot and root fresh weight, shoot and root dry weight and yield was significantly reduced as compared to control plants. Water relation parameters, chlorophyll fluorescence and chlorophyll pigments were also adversely affected. Levels of Na+, Ca2+, P and N increased. Levels of K+ ions also increased.
