Response of Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) to plant growth promoting rhizobacteria in combination with different levels of nitrogen and phosphorus

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Plant Growth promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPRs) like Azotobacter and Azospirillum (Az+As), Phosphorus solubilizing -bacteria (PSB), Germinator (a synthetic germination and early growth enhancer) and PSB+Ger on yield of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) variety Mino Early at Vegetable Research Area, Institute of Horticultural Sciences, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan, during the winter season of 2012-13. Seeds of radish cultivar (Mino-Early) were treated with PGPRs and germinator (a synthetic seed germination enhancer) in combination with different levels of nitrogen and phosphorus to evaluate their effects on growth and productivity of radish. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The results revealed that Azotobacter plus Azospirillum improved all plant and yield related parameters while germinator negatively affected them. Number of leaves per plant, root fresh weight and marketable yield were significantly high due to combined application of PSB and recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF). While, leaf fresh weight, fresh weight of whole plant, biological yield, agronomic efficiency and yield response were high in response to application of (Az+As) in combination with half dose of nitrogen. Root diameter was increased when RDF was used along with PSB and (Az+As). Further, roots of maximum length were obtained when Az+As was applied with half dose of nitrogen. Moreover, agronomic efficiency and yield response can be reliably estimated from marketable yield, root fresh weight and whole plant fresh weight. While, root fresh weight followed by whole plant fresh weight can provide reliable estimate of marketable yield.
