Physico-chemical profiling of fruits of six guava (Psidium guajava L.) cultivars
2016
Raza, S.A.
Guava (Psidium guajava L.) belongs to the family Myrtaceae is considered one of the most distributed and economical fruit of tropical and subtropical regions of Asian Subcontinent. It is attractive having excellent nutritional value, flavor and medicinal properties because of its use as traditional medicine. In Pakistan, it is mostly grown in Punjab. The main objective of present study was to investigate guava germplasm through morphological and biochemical profiling. Different cultivars of guava were included in this study which and were collected from Regional Agricultural Research Institute (RARI) Bahawalpur and University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Morphological characters of guava fruit i.e. fruit and seed weight, length, width, flesh thickness and pulp weight were recorded. The data pretending to these pomological features showed variation. HPLC analysis of sugars depicted that glucose, fructose and sucrose were in the range of 0.11 to 8.35, 2.28 to 8.67 and 2.41 to 9.31 mg/100g, respectively. Moreover, the data showed distinction among all the factors under investigation in all the cultivars. The biochemical parameters of guava fruits i.e. antioxidant activity, total phenolic contents, ascorbic acid, anthocyanin and total flavonoids were in the range of 46.33%-79.88%, 32.35-65.02 mg GAE/100g, 56.45-66.29 mg/100g, 0.13-2.26 mg/100 g and 170.17-314.43 mg CAE/g respectively. The activity of antioxidant enzymes in guava fruit viz. peroxidase (0.58-7.38), catalase (5.49-45.54) and superoxidase dismutase (13.47-49.26) as IU per mg of protein were also studied. The data pertaining to soluble protein contents also showed variability from 1.89-17.34 mg/100 g among all the tested cultivars. Overall results from present study showed that all the tested cultivars are highly nutritious and beneficial related to human health.
