Estimating combining ability effects through line X tester analysis in wheat
2016
Rasool, A.
Nine genotypes were evaluated by using line x tester analysis for combining ability and yield contributing characters in wheat, in the experimental area of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics during rabi season of 2015-2016. Analysis of variance result indicated highly significant differences among the genotypes for traits associated to yield i.e. Plant height, flag leaf area, spike length, number of tillers per plant, spike density, grain weight per spike, number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight and grain yield per plant. All the different agronomic traits of nine genotypes six as females viz; 9796, 9797, 9801, 9802, 9803, 9806 and remaining three as males viz; Galaxy-2013, Millet-2011 and Punjab-2011 were further statistically analyzed by using line x tester analysis. Line x tester analysis provide information on general and specific combining ability effects of genotypes and to genetic mechanism controlling certain these traits the result of line x tester analysis when portioned into various components also showed highly significant difference between parents crosses and line into tester cross combination. The female parent 9801 and male parent Millet-2011 illustrated positive general combining ability effects for spike length, spikelets per spike, grains per spike and grain weight per spike. The cross combination 9797 x Galaxy-2013 was a good specific combiner for plant height, no. of tillers per plant, flag leaf area, spike length and grains per spike. 9803 x Punjab-2011 and 9806 x Millet-2011 is superior combiner for spike density, grain weight per spike and grain yield per plant.
