In northern countries, coconut is known for its lipid content and as a particularly rich source of useful lauric oil. However in many producing countries, coconut is known more for its milk and its special taste as a refreshing drink. New quality criteria need to be measured to fit consumers' needs. The coconut palm is a perennial plant that produces continuously throughout the year. Monitoring a single variety to evaluate its fruit quality takes at least three years and can generate more than 1000 samples. This study set out to determine if NIBS (Near InfraRed Spectroscopy) could be used to evaluate different coconut cultivars according to predefined quality criteria. It also aimed to develop a sustainable research methodology, suitable for use in the coconut production context. (Résumé d'auteur)
