Exploring Pad-um: a rice ritual offering

Pad-um is a rice ritual practiced by people living in mountainous areas of Pandan, Antique adjoining mountains of Ibajay, Aklan [Philippines]. This research endeavor aimed to create dance steps from the farming practices employed by upland farmers in the harvesting of rice in order to preserve and protect the karay-a culture. Data were gathered through key informant interview (KII) and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) among farmers in Barangay [village] Napuid, Pandan. The data revealed that materials used for the ritual were as follows banig (sleeping mat); hal-o (wooden pestle), Kararaw (winnower) and palay (rice stalk). Based on the collated data, dance steps were created which involves salute (saludo), carry (hakot), hit (lampos), grind (linas) and clean (limpyo) hitting (lampusanay), and the finale. The costumes were kimono in bell shape sleeves, skirt, and headdress for female dancers and camesa chino and green colored trousers for male dancers. This dance is usually done an offering to unknown spirits or can be a festive offering for movement.
