Organic agriculture is rapidly evolving and organic farming continues to grow in many countries. In 2015, 10.3 million hectares were organically farmed in the EU countries compared to 15,298 hectares in Serbia. However, the participation of fruit production in organic production in Serbia is higher than in the EU, because 22% of organic agricultural land is under orchards, while in the EU the share is 11%. In addition, organic fruit is an important export product for Serbia since it generates more and more revenue every year. Serbia and the EU also differ in the types of fruit that dominate organic production. In accordance with the organic principles, plums, apples and raspberries are the main types of fruit in Serbia, while olives and grapes are the most important in the EU.
