The chemical composition of wood in pine crops planted at different densities on drained peat soil

The chemical composition of wood was studied in 40-year-old pine crops originally planted at different densities on drained peat soil in 1973. We observed how mineral fertilizer sand herbicides modified wood composition in pine crops planted on drained peat soil over a 30-year period. The content of cellulose, lignin and resinous substances in the wood were determined at 10-year intervals starting with the age of 7 years. Sawn sections of model trees from each variant of stocking density were taken for analysis. The experimental design included plots treated with mineral fertilizers only, fertilizers and herbicides, as well as control plots. Resinous content was determined by accelerated extraction, lignin content – by the sulfuric acid method modified by Komarov, cellulose – by Kürschner-Hoffer method. A tendency was detected during the study that cellulose content in pine wood in planted crops decreased as the crop density increased, the reason being a change in the wood anatomical structure. Wood in denser pine crops had a higher lignin content. Wood in the pine crops was getting less resinous with age in all variants of the experiment. These data can be of value in the case such timber is used in the chemical industry. The patterns of change in cellulose, lignin and resinous substances content in the wood differed among pine crops planted at different original densities (one, two, or four thousands plants per ha). The data obtained in this study can be taken into account in the practices of using pine wood planted at different densities on drained peat soil in the chemical industry.
