In the framework of the Nordic-Baltic public private partnership the breeders of the LLU Research Institute of Agronomy was engaged in pre-breeding activities of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) with the aim to make a contribution to the research of perennial ryegrass and improve breeding material of the perennial ryegrass. As a result, persistent, productive, resistant to various stresses populations that are particularly suitable for growing in our climatic conditions could be developed in the future. Perennial ryegrass provides high yields and excellent fodder quality, but in Latvia its cultivation is still risky due to insufficient winter hardiness. The main tasks were to improve the winter hardiness, persistence and stress tolerance of ryegrass growing in Northern European region in the context of the climate change. The article summarizes the data on one of many activities of the project which was the evaluation of tetraploids (hereinafter genotypes, generated in the Lithuanian Agricultural and Forestry Research Centre (LAMMC) in the field conditions. The aim was to obtain detailed phenotypic and ploidy information on 250 genotypes. The total 63 scores for evaluation of genotypes were made over a 3-year period (2016−2018). In the 2nd ley year seeds were collected for 199 or 80% of genotypes from 358 plants (48%). Genotypes were grouped depending on the maturing rate and growth habit. The data analysis shows that there are significant differences between the groups. It allows to make a selection for further breeding work. As a result of the previous evaluations and data analyses, in 2018 the most promising plants were selected according to certain criteria, and 6 mutually distinct populations were created. The intercross pollination within the populations and further evaluation and selection will be carried out.
