This interdisciplinary study of landscape ecology has helped in the development of theory and methods by systematic use of systems theory. Analysis of the flow of material and energy in subsystems of the landscape leads to the design of a hierarchic model. This contains natural components and processes, and human influences, classified by their relative (in)dependence. With the general model, description and forecasting of effects of man-made and natural changes was possible. Special models, intended especially for the component groundwater, illustrate the principles. Major changes in the Dutch coastal dunes are described and estimated. In a century, there has been a serious decrease in ecological values, mainly caused by coastal erosion, building, considerable lowering of groundwater, infiltration and man-made forests. Only 40% of the area is unaffected or increased in value.A map of landscape ecology combines geological, geomorphological, pedological and vegetational data. The dune slacks received extra attention, being the most vulnerable kind of habitat. The map legend reflects the principles of the hierarchic model.The results were used for land evaluation, in which nature conservation has priority. Former types of land use, often contributing to ecological values were mainly agricultural. Their disappearance implied a loss of value. 'Relevant' types of land use are dealt with, partly in relation to two representative areas, leading to an assessment of which activities are 'tolerable' or 'desirable'
