The Dutch dairy sector has difficulty staying below the European maximum of phosphate excretion by cattle. Phosphorus (P) excretionis calculated by subtracting P in milk and P used for growth from P intake via feed. P in milk accounts for approximately 95% of the total P used by cows, thus an accurate estimation for P in milk is necessary for a reliable calculation of P excretion. In this research the average P-content in Dutch dairy milk was studied. Next, models were investigated to estimate P in milk basedon milk components that could be analysed using mid-infrared (MIR). The annual average P-content in Dutch dairy milk was 101.2 mg P/100 g raw milk, which is 4.3% higher than the fixed value of P in milkused to calculate P excretion, which is 97 mg P/100 g milk. This means a decrease in annual phosphate excretion by the Dutch dairy sector of 1.0 to 1.4 million kg. The P content in milk can be estimated using a model with calcium and zinc.
