Pigeonpea (Cajanus caian (L.) Millspaugh), also known as red gram, is thesixth most important grain legume crops grown in the tropics and sub- tropicsbetween 30ºN and 3oºs latitudes. Pigeonpea is cultivated in about 50 countries ofAsia, Africa and Americas. This crop is adaptable in a number of cropping systemsand is grown on marginal to rich lands. Pigeonpea is cultivated in almost 4 millionhectares worldwide. In India, this crop is grown over 2.9 million hectares formultiple uses such as food, fodder and fuel (Nene and Sheila, 1990). Grain legumesor pulses are the major source of dietary protein in developing countries. The highprotein content and relatively low cost of these food legumes has earned them thetitle, "Poor man's Meat" which effectively underlines their vital importance indeveloping nations. Legumes have also played a major role in patterning theagricultural systems in the tropics
