The mass of spike is an indicator of grain yield productivity and can be used as a criterion for selection in wheat breeding programs. The aim of this study is to examine the variability of mass of spike in 20 genetically divergent wheat cultivars in different agroecological conditions. Field experiments were arranged as a randomized block design with three replications in two vegetation seasons. For analysis, a sample of 20 plants, for each cultivar and replication, was taken in the maturity phase. Significant differences were found between the cultivars. In the first year, the average mass of spike varied from 3.30 g in cultivar Zadruga to 4.49 g in cultivar Milica, and in the second year from 3.20 g in cultivar Alfa to 3.92 g in cultivar Oplenka. The average value for all cultivars was higher in the first year (3.97g) compared to the other (3.61g). Variability of mass of spike in cultivars, as well as significant differences between them, are conditioned by genotype, environmental factors and genotype /environment interaction.
