Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) represents one of the most common cultivated plants, mostly due to significant applications in pharmaceutical and food industries. The investigations from recent years demonstrated significant content of biologically active compounds obtained from basil plants, however, quantitative and qualitative characteristics, as well as the comprehensive biotechnological potential of the basil, vary primarily depending on the investigated cultivars. Here we discuss commercially and economically most represented basil cultivars from Serbia (smal-leaved, Genovese, purple-leaved and lemon basil), as well as their biotechnological potential and potential in the production of significant bioactive compounds.
