Economic and social aspects of agri-food sector

The article contains the results of an analysis, based on data from the Farm Structure Survey and the social aspects of agriculture and food industry, focusing on employment and job evaluation. In Slovakia, predominantly rural areas dominate, with agriculture and production output linked to it. According to other Farm Structure Survey, there were 25 658 farms of legal and natural persons in Slovakia, which manage 1 889 819 ha of utilized agricultural land. A large majority group consists of natural persons, namely registered and unregistered (87,8 %) and a minority group of legal entities (12,2 %). From the point of view of the size of farmed land, the situation is the opposite when enterprises of legal persons farm 80,0 % of agricultural land and enterprises of natural persons farm approximatelly 20 % of agricultural land. The average size of farms in Slovakia is 73,65 ha for all subjects, including unregistered. For legal entities it is 1287 ha. In 2017, 46,6 thousand persons were employed in agriculture and 41 thousand persons in the food industry. In both sectors, wages do not reach the national economy average wage level.
