Rootstock potential of some selected bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) genotypes from Turkish Germplsm for watermelon under saline conditions
2017
Yamaç, M.
In this study, rootstock potentials of some bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) genotypes from Turkish germplasm were tested in saline conditions (6 dS m-1) by grafting Crimson Tide F1 watermelon variety. Two commercial rootstocks, Argenterio and RS841, were used for comparison. The experiment was carried out in the Seyrani Faculty of Agriculture's growth-chamber and laboratory in 2016; with 3 replications laid out randomly according to the trial design. Exposed to salt stress, the visual scale, fresh and dry weights, plant height, number of branches, stem diameter, leaf area and number, root length and volume, photosynthesis, SPAD, ion leaching, leaf water content, sodium (Na+), chlorine (Cl-), potassium (K+) and calcium (Ca+2) ion concentrations as well as proline and glycine-betaine ratios were measured on the plants. The results showed that 70-07 and 35-02 bottle gourd genotypes were more tolerant to salinity than watermelon and the other genotypes used. These two gnotypes were found superior to the commercial rootstocks (Argentario and RS841) under saline conditions. And it was thus noted that the bottle gourd genotypes have a high rootstock potential for watermelon under salinity stress conditions. This potential should be exloited in rootstock breeding programs.
