Energetic valorisation of wood wastes and by-products by staged pyrolysis

New European regulations will forbid the disposal of wood wastes (waste wood from demolition, framing, packing, pallets, etc.) or wood processing wastes (particleboards, wood composites, varnished and painted woods, etc.). in these wastes wood is associated with other, different materials (glues, paints, preservatives, paper, etc.). Their recycling is not always feasible and presently the preferred method for their disposal is energetic valorisation. This last option can be achieved in two ways, by direct combustion or by pyrolysis in the absence of oxygen; both approaches yield a solid and a gas phase, both fuels. The direct combustion route produces a large volume of hot flue gas containing not only the main products of wood combustion (CO2, H2O) but also several undesirable pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds, and volatile metals (mercury, lead, etc.). The most recent European Community accord on environmental preservation requires that the combustion gases should be treated before their release to the atmosphere. The volume of gas to be treated is significant but it can be decreased if the energetic valorisation process is split into two or more stages. For several complex wood wastes, the thermal degradation of the materials present in association with the wood (urea-formaldehyde resin, polyurethane varnish, etc.) takes place at temperatures different from the ones at which wood constituents degrade. So, by operating at temperatures between 250°C and 280°C, it was possible to achieve substantial degradation of the urea-formaldehyde resin (53%), while at the same temperature level only 20% of the wood was degraded. As the volume of gases produced at this temperature level is limited (30% of the total possible), treatment of these gases to remove pollutants is economically more feasible. Moreover, the solid residue obtained is practically free of polluting elements. Similar approaches have been used for two other wood additives, polyurethane varnish and preservatives based on chrome, copper and arsenic salts. In this paper only the pyrolysis of wood wastes associated with UF resin is considered. The optimal conditions for their treatment by pyrolysis are given, specifying the compositions of the gas phase and the solid residues. After that, the pyrolysis stages are modelled in order to get relevant kinetic models that can be used to design an industrial pyrolytic unit.

L'objectif de la recherche est de préciser dans quelle mesure la valorisation énergétique de déchets de bois peut être envisagée par pyrolyse étagée qui peut permettre de réduire le volume d'un effluent à traiter contrairement à la combustion directe ou la gazéification qui nécessitent un traitement de la totalité de l'effluent gazeux. La valorisation par pyrolyse est examinée sur trois déchets : un bois recouvert de résine urée-formol, un bois imprégné de créosote et un bois imprégné d'une solution saline à base de cuivre, chrome, arsenic. Pour ces trois types de déchets la pyrolyse étagée paraît être la meilleure voie de valorisation. En effet, la créosote peut être totalement évaporée à 280°C alors que le taux de dégradation du bois reste inférieur à 10%. De même à 280°C, la résine UF peut être dégradée à plus de 90% avec un taux de gazéification de l'azote organique supérieur à 70%. Enfin en opérant à 400°C, il est possible de gazéifier le bois à plus de 60% tout en maintenant les trois éléments Cu, Cr, As au sein du résidu solide. En définitive, la pyrolyse étagée est la voie de valorisation énergétique optimale d'un déchet de bois à condition qu'il puisse être trié et que la température optimale de dégradation soit sensiblement extérieure au domaine de température de dégradation du bois.
