Vaccination against diseases caused by salmonid alphavirus
2014
mérour, Emilie | Bremont, Michel
The first salmonid alphaviruses, Salmon pancreas disease virus (SPDV) and Sleeping disease virus (SDV), were discovered and molecularly characterized more than 15 years ago, and since then few studies have really focused on vaccine development. However, these viruses are now becoming a real threat for farmed fish and wild fish populations. Pancreas disease has recently been listed as a notifiable disease in Norway, and there is renewed interest in developing strategies to protect fish from these pathogens. In this chapter we will present an update on what is known of the molecular biology of these viruses, the diagnostics tools that have been developed, the more recent epidemiological studies, and the existing and possible future vaccines to fight against these emerging viruses.
