The 20 chapters in this book synthesize the scattered information on intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams (IRES), exploring the effects of flow intermittence on geomorphology, hydrology, biogeochemistry, and ecology in these ecosystems. – Here, we distil this information into fourteen themes, most of which emphasize how intermittence and pulsed flows govern almost every physical, chemical, and ecological aspect of IRES and must be explicitly considered in conservation, restoration, and ecosystem management. – Despite substantial advances in scientific knowledge of IRES in the last two decades, major methodological, geographical/disciplinary, and conceptual gaps remain. – IRES are widespread yet undervalued ecosystems that deserve greater recognition of their services and more effective legislative protection and management in the face of global climate change and increasing human demands for water.
