The present level and perspectives of non-wood forest products utilization in Georgia.

The present level of utilization of non-wood forest products (wild fruits and berries, mushrooms, medicinal and technical forest plant resources, etc.) is considered. It is underlined that until now no attention has been paid to the utilization of non-wood forest resources. Furthermore, they are not even accounted for. Presently, only a limited amount of them are used by indigenous people for their own needs or for sale. The most part of non-wood forest resources is left every year in forests and rot. The examples of some European countries where the use of non-wood forest resources is on high level and the significant incomes are obtained by the local governments are given in the article. For improvement of the present situation the following measures must be taken: all non-wood forest resources must be accounted according to their types, the places of their growth and approximate annual harvest amounts must be determined, the small businessmen’s attention must be drawn to the collection and processing non-wood forest resources.
