THE CHANGES IN FISH COMMUNITY AND MAJOR CARP POPULATION IN BEELS IN THE SYLHET-MYMENSINGH BASIN, BANGLADESH

The fish community in beels in the Sylhet-Mymensingh basin in Bangladeshchanged dramatically from 1967-1973 to 1984. The dominant species of carp inthe community shifted from large Labeo rohita, Catla catla, Cinhinus mrigalaand Labeo nandina to small Labeo calbasu, Labeo gonius and other miscellaneousfishes. Major carp populations (L. rohita, C. catla and C. mrigala) which werecomposed of large age 1+ and 11+ fish in 1967-1973 changed to populationswhich primarily consisted of small age 0+ fish in 1985. The above changes inthe fish community and major carp population structures suggest that overfishingis a major cause for the scarcity of large fish and decline in major carp stocksin beels in the Sylhet-Mymensigh basin.
