Groundwater resource estimation and delineation of potential zones for groundwater development using geospatial technology in a watershed

Scientific and reliable quantification of indispensable groundwater is very much essential for sustainable utilization and management. Micro-watershed level groundwater resources planning should be based on its comprehensive analysis. In this study, an attempt has been made to assess the dynamic groundwater resource and annual draft to prepare a comprehensive plan of groundwater resource management of Ghumuda watershed of Sundergarh block in Sundergarh district, Odisha. From the study, the net annual groundwater availability was estimated to be 80.98 ha-m, while the annual draft as 10.18 ha-m. The total groundwater recharge due to various sources was also computed using GEC norms. The present study also revealed that the stage of groundwater development in the study area was very low (12.57%), which is well within the safe limit. So, there is tremendous scope for groundwater resource development in the study area. Different thematic maps like slope, land use/land cover, lineaments and hydrogeomorphology were prepared using remote sensing and GIS techniques. These thematic maps were superimposed to identify the groundwater potential zones using ArcGIS-10.1. The four groundwater potential zones were identified such as poor, moderate, good to moderate and very good. Based upon the findings of these studies 7 tube well sites have been proposed over the intersection of lineaments in the watershed with their latitude and longitude.
