Nursery rearing of Indian major carp fry under different stocking densities

Experiments were conducted in ponds of 0.04 ha each during July-September,1995 to evaluate the growth and survival of Indian major carp fry. Theexperiments were carried out for a period of 15 days for each species and atthree densities, 2.5-7.5 million/ha for catla and at four densities, 2.5-10.0million/ha for rohu and mrigal in duplicate ponds. Growth of carp fry in termsof length/weight was maximum in ponds with the lowest stocking density of2.5 million/ha. Growth of catla was found to be higher than rohu and mrigalat similar densities. The maximum survival obtained were 61.6, 67.8 and 69.9% in catla, rohu and mrigal respectively at 2.5 million/ha stocking density.In general growth and survival decreased with increase in stocking density.Among the three species, mrigal recorded higher mean survival followed byrohu at similar stocking density.
