Obtaining of sunflower hybrids (Helianthus annuus L.) resistant to broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.)is one of the most effective strategies for parasite control. In this context, the principal objective of the breeders is to identify new sources of resistance for sunflower broomrape and to transfer the genes of resistance into genotypes included in the breeding programs. Over time, various sources of resistance to broomrape have been highlighted, the most important being open pollinated local populations and wild species, and lately – the collections of cultivated sunflower created by sunflower breeding centers. This paper includes a brief description of principal sources of resistance for sunflower broomrape and of the evolution of breeding programs
