The flora and vegetation of the Republic of Moldova in the context of natural and anthropogenic impacts

Currently, the state of the flora and vegetation of the Republic of Moldova is quite unsatisfactory. Thegeneral negative tendency in the evolution of flora and vegetation is the cumulative result of natural and anthropogenic impacts. Some rare plant species are becoming extinct, the number of phyto-individuals in the populations of rarespecies is decreasing, the range of many plant species is reducing, the vegetation degradation is becoming more severe. Because of the hydrotechnical works of deepening and straightening the riverbeds of small rivers, many wetlands with communities of rare plants were destroyed. The fallow lands with steppe vegetation with needle-grass and fescue meadows in the Bugeac Steppe and Balti Steppe are degrading because of the poor management. Grass plant communities are invaded by invasive plant species that are dangerous to human health, such as ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia). The forest plant communities and the forest gene pool as such also keep degrading. There is a general tendency of reduction of the fundamental natural stands and increase of the percentage of derived and artificial stands, because of the application of inadequate ecological reconstruction methods. A major problem is the death of beech, hornbeam,ash trees etc. The forests in the Dniester and Prut floodplains are invaded by the boxelder maple (Acer negundo). A national monitoring system is going to be created to assess the current state of rare plant populations. In order to improve forest and grassland ecosystems, it is necessary to use appropriate technologies as a means of conserving biodiversity
